Parliamentary Vice-Speaker Algirdas Sysas of the Social Democrats told BNS the decision came in response to a request from the conservatives' leadership.
"The conservatives on the board asked to cancel the trip. It turned out that the political group has not approved the trip, and the MP provided incomplete information to the board," Sysas said.
The parliament's board last week gave a green light to Vareikis' trip to Voronezh on 6-12 September for a human rights observation mission organized by the human rights organization Open Dialogue Fund. All costs, except for insurance, were covered by the inviting organization.
In the past, Varekis was involved in several alcohol-related incidents, including one last August when he was found at Vilnius airport in what seemed to be a heavily intoxicated condition before his flight to Rome. The MP also did not return to Vilnius as scheduled, causing his family to turn to the police.
Vareikis also missed the 2013 autumn session in rehabilitation for his alcohol addiction.
