The Lithuanian Seimas' Committee on Legal Affairs decided on Wednesday that the legalization of same-sex partnership would not contradict the Lithuanian Constitution, Stasys Šedbaras, the committee's deputy chairman, says.

"The majority of committee members agreed that the bill would not run counter to the Constitution," the MP told BNS.

A bill partnership, which would be open to both same-sex and opposite-sex couples, was registered by nine Social Democratic and Liberal MPs in late March. At the moment, Lithuania does not recognize any form of registered partnership.

Those in favour of such changes say the legal status of cohabitating homosexual couples is not officially recognized and they cannot make use of opportunities available for married couples, ranging from inheritance to receiving information about partner's health conditions at medical establishments in case of illness.

Critics say, however, that such a move would undermine the institution of traditional family and have negative impact on young people's attitudes to family.
