The Lithuanian government on Wednesday backed the Ministry of the Interior's proposal to close the Migration Department and its functions transfer to the Police Department and the State Border Guard Service.

Under the Ministry of the Interior's plan, the department will be liquidated by dismissing 80 people. Parts of them will be later employed by the Police Department and the SBGD. The ministry will also take over some functions.

"The immigration-related process must be effective, functions cannot overlap, and human resources must be used effectively. At the end of the day, we need to have responsible institutions from the start till the end of the process, with full responsibility. The process must be swift and easy for people to avoid excessive and overlapping procedures that "wash out" responsibility and make the whole process non-transparent and non-effective," Interior Minister Saulius Skvernelis told journalists on Wednesday.

The move still needs parliamentary approval.

The closure should be finalized by early 2016.
