The ruling Lithuanian Farmers and Greens Union (LFGU) tops the latest popularity rankings, followed by the conservative Homeland Union–Lithuanian Christian Democrats in second place and by the Social Democrats (LSDP) in third, according to the latest opinion poll conducted by Vilmorus and published by the daily Lietuvos Rytas on Saturday.

Some 21.1 percent of those polled by Vilmorus earlier this month said they would vote for the LFGU if general elections were held next Sunday, slightly down from 21.7 percent who said so last month. Another 14.1 percent would vote for the Homeland Union, up from 13.6 percent.

"The LFGU has seen a downward trend for the fourth month in a row. There has been a slow but steady decline, even though they remain number one," Vilmorus CEO Vladas Gaidys told BNS.

Support for the LSDP grew to 10.7 percent in April, from 7.8 percent in March. The rise in the Social Democrats' ratings comes as the party is electing a new leader.

"The Social Democrats' (rating) recovered somewhat compared with last month. I'd attribute this to the leadership election. New faces help improve the party's image," Gaidys said.

Support for the Liberal Movement rose slightly to 5.6 percent, from 5.1 percent in March, but the poll was conducted before prosecutors said they suspected the party of having indirectly received illegal financial support from MG Baltic, one of the country's biggest business groups.

Some 3.6 percent of respondents said they would vote for the Order and Justice party, up from 2.5 percent.

Vilmorus carried out the representative poll between Apr. 1 and 9. Some 14.4 percent of respondents said they would not go to the polls if elections were held next Sunday and 19.4 were undecided.
