"This is an agreement between the parties that defines all aspects of cooperation in the Seimas. Basically, (it will cover) all those things that are taking place now and our cooperation during European Parliament, presidential, municipal and Seimas elections," LSDLP leader Gediminas Kirkilas told BNS.

"The (current) government was formed based on the proportion of seats won during (the 2016 general) elections, and there is a consensus that no changes should be made in this respect," Kirkilas said.

"What matters to us most is focusing on the ongoing reforms and work that Lithuania needs, rather than sharing (government) posts," he added.

The parties until now cooperated under a coalition deal signed by their political groups in the parliament.

After winning the 2016 elections, LFGU signed a coalition agreement with the Lithuanian Social Democratic Party (LSDP). However, the junior coalition partner decided to withdraw from the ruling bloc after electing Gintautas Paluckas as its new leader.

The move was opposed by some of LSDP's influential veterans, who left the party, set up a separate Social Democratic Labor political group in the Seimas and signed a coalition agreement with the LFGU group in the parliament.

LFGU has 57 seats in the 141-member parliament and LSDLP has 11 seats.
