The diplomacy chief also called for continued cooperation between the European Union (EU) and Turkey.

"After the referendum in Turkey, we hope that the society of our important Ally in the NATO Alliance and the partner in the EU retains its unity. It is crucial to continue further cooperation between the EU and Turkey," Linkevičius told BNS via his spokeswoman.

Results published by Turkey's election authorities show that Turkish voters by narrow majority supported broader mandate for President Recep Tayyip Erdogan in a referendum on Sunday.

On Tuesday, the European Commission urged Turkey to launch a transparent investigation into possible violations of voting procedures.
