Lithuania's conservative MPs Audronius Ažubalis and Laurynas Kasčiūnas have proposed a separate law to require removal of all objects, if their name or content propagates communism or any other totalitarian regimes.

"With this law, we want to clearly regulate that various public objects should be either removed or changed, if their names or content propagate communism. There are around 150-160 of these objects, the communist permafrost, across Lithuania," Kasčiūnas said at a press conference at the parliament on Monday.

Under the bill, the law would apply to objects, areas and events of public use, including buildings, monuments, memorial plaques, streets, squares, as well as prizes, competitions, etc.

The list of the objects should be made by the Lithuanian Genocide and Resistance Research Center before approval at the government.

"Up until now, everything was left up to municipalities, everything was decentralized but I think the time has come to centralize it all and appoint the Lithuanian Genocide and Resistance Research Center as a clear expert institution to make the list that would be submitted to the government for approval," said Kasciunas.

The initiators want the law to take effect in July of 2018.
