Prosecutors of the Kaunas county have detained Nerijus Ašmenskas, chief of the Aleksandras Barauskas checkpoint of the Varėna unit of the State Border Guard Service, border chief Renatas Požela confirmed to delfi.lt news portal.

Searches were conducted in Ašmenskas' home and office.

The State Border Guard Service's Immunity Service is conducting a probe in a criminal case, and Kaunas prosecutors suspect Ašmenskas of abuse of powers.

He was detained last Thursday, however, the information was not published. Ašmenskas fell ill immediately after the detention. No information is available yet as to whether the official has been questioned or presented suspicions.

Požela said he had received Ašmenskas' resignation, adding he had not yet signed it.
