British diplomat Michael Peart, the UK's first ambassador to Lithuania, has passed away, the Lithuanian Embassy in London announced on Thursday.

"So saddened to learn that Michael Peart, first British Ambassador to Lithuania, passed away. Lithuania lost a true friend," the embassy tweeted.

Michael Peart served as the UK's ambassador in Vilnius between 1991 and 1994. He was aged 71.
