The president says that, apart from its symbolic meaning, the event will also provide a chance to discuss the most important issues of the European Union (EU).

This year, the award will be presented to European Parliament President Martin Schulz for his efforts to promote democracy in Europe, defend the interests of European citizens, strengthen the role of the European Parliament, and foster European identity.

"This award is for one's lifetime political activities and Mr Schulz definitely deserves it," Grybauskaitė said.

According to her, participants of the event will discuss the issues of the EU Eastern Partnership policy and European and Baltic security.

"It is an excellent forum to prepare and make decisions, to communicate. It is definitely beneficial for Lithuania to take part in such an important and prestigious political club" the president says.

Taking part in the ceremony in Aachen will be King Felipe VI and Queen Letizia of Spain, King Abdullah II of Jordan, German President Joachim Gauck, French President François Hollande, Ukrainian President Petro Poroshenko, Finnish President Sauli Vainamo Niinisto, European Commission President Jean-Claude Juncker, European Council President Donald Tusk, leaders of the European Investment Bank and Konrad Adenauer Foundation, Croatian Prime Minister Zoran Milanovic, Latvian Prime Minister Laimdota Straujuma, Federal Chancellor Werner Faymann of Austria, and other high-level officials.
