The prime minister congratulated the gymnasium's principal Misha Jakob, Israel's ambassador to Lithuania and other guests on Israel's independence day.

Skvernelis thanked the Jewish community of Lithuania for always supporting the country's independence goals, defending it and considerably contributing to the current development of Lithuania, the government said in a press release.

"Lithuania highly values the partnership with Israel: increase of youth exchange, growing activity of economic and trade cooperation, with a focus on the international community's efforts to ensure peace and security," said the prime minister.

"This year, we expect Israel's Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu to visit Lithuania. During the visit in June, we plan to hold a bilateral governmental dialogue," said Skvernelis.

The prime minister urged to develop a tolerant environment in Lithuania, calling to preserve the shared cultural heritage.

"This is an asset for generations to come. I see a cery clera role of the education system and every school in fostering the historical memory. Today I want to sincerely thank the principal of the Vilnius Sholom Alecheim Gymnasium, the academic staff, students and their parents whose efforts made the gymnasium a standard for the education system of Vilnius and Lithuania," he added.
