The United Nations Security Council has failed to adequately respond to the Syrian crisis, Lithuania's Foreign Minister Linas Linkevičius said during a debate on the Middle East conflicts organized in New York on Wednesday.

The minister also noted the need to fight the roots of terrorism and seek that perpetrators terrorist crimes be brought to justice.

"The UN Security Council has built a legal basis to fight terrorism, including a statement on foreign terrorist fighters by the Security Council chairman during Lithuania's chairmanship. In order to defeat terrorists, we must use all means at our disposal and put an end to impunity for terrorists," Linkevičius is quoted as saying in a press release by the Ministry of Foreign Affairs.

Talking about the current crisis in Syria, Minister Linkevičius noted that four resolutions had been vetoed in the UN Security Council. The vetoes, according to the Lithuanian minister, were intended to defend the interests of Syria's regime rather than civilian victims. Those who vetoed the resolution are just as responsible for human casualties and refugees as the regime of President Bashar al-Assad, according to Linkevičius.

The debate in the UN Security Council on the Middle East conflicts was organized by the Russian delegation that chaired the Security Council in September.
