Ms. Grybauskaitė has underlined that spiritual support from Vatican was very important for Lithuania during the hardest times of Soviet oppression.

The president will invite the pope to visit Lithuania. The first pope to ever visit Lithuania was John Paul II in 1993.

In 2016, Lithuania and Vatican will celebrate the 25th anniversary of diplomatic relations.

According to 2011 census data, 77% of Lithuanians identify themselves as Roman Catholic.
