Lithuanian MEP Petras Auštrevičius has started a hunger strike over the illegal imprisonment of Ukrainian pilot Nadiya Savchenko in Russia.

According to the MEP, members of different political groups of the European Parliament (EP) every day will be mailing a letter of protest to Russia's Permanent Representative to the European Union Vladimir Chizhov, demanding to release the pilot.

On Wednesday, MEP Auštrevičius wrote and mailed the first letter. On Thursday, another letter will be sent out by MEP Rebecca Harms from the Greens, later - by MEP Michaela Sojdrova and other members of the EP.

The Lithuanian representative says that other colleagues are planning to join the letter sending campaign. MEP Sojdrova will start her hunger strike after MEP Auštrevičius.
