Lithuania would benefit from appointing a politically neutral person for issues of the Astravyets Nuclear Power Plant under construction in Belarus, political scientist Ramunas Vilpišauskas has told the national television LRT.

Vilpišauskas said that the biggest problem now was in connection to the traditional search of guilty parties for the advanced stage the Belarusian utility has reached by now.

"I believe it would be far more constructive to reach agreement at the parliament, include the president in the issue and appoint a person, for instance, as the case was with the Aleksandras Abišala-led commission for negotiations of the consequences of the closure of the (Lithuanian) Ignalina nuclear plant. In my opinion, it would be just as useful now to have a single politically neutral individual enjoying trust of all main figures in Lithuania, (…) to formulate a common position," said Vilpišauskas, the director of the Vilnius University's International Relations and Political Science Institute.

Lithuania has been criticizing Belarus of falling short of safety standards in the N-plant construction. A series of reports came over the past months about possible incidents at the construction of the utility, including a few that have been confirmed by the Belarusian Energy Ministry.

The nuclear utility is being built some 50 km from Lithuania's capital Vilnius by the Russian company Rosatom, with launch of the first reactor planned for late 2018.
