“Today's agreement will strengthen our nuclear expert capacity, increase people's understanding of nuclear energy and its safety," said Masiulis.

The two countries agreed to exchange information and views on nuclear energy development and to share experience on nuclear safety, emergency preparedness and response measure improvements, especially after the accident at the Fukushima Daiichi nuclear power plant.

The initiative also aims to promote cooperation between the two countries' academia and industry in the area.

Masiulis said that Lithuania wants to expand cooperation with Japan in other types of energy generation, including by collaborating with Japanese companies and research institutes on the development of LNG technologies in Lithuania. He said this could help Lithuania to become a regional leader in the LNG market.

"In addition, Japan has much experience in the field of pumped storage plants. We would like to become better acquainted with this experience and to use it at the Kruonis pumped storage plant,” said Masiulis.

A number of Lithuanian companies have expertise in the field of solar energy, and have successfully implemented projects in Asian countries, with the Energy Minister hoping Japan may also be interested in those technologies.
