Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu on Monday accepted an invitation from Lithuanian Foreign Minister Linas Linkevičius to visit Lithuania, the Lithuanian Foreign Ministry said.

Linkevičius' meeting with Netanyahu in Jerusalem "focused on positive developments in various areas of bilateral economic cooperation: the growth in the volume of trade, the increase in the number of tourists, and successful cooperation in the fields of science and innovation," the ministry said in a press release.

The two officials also exchanged views on threats facing their regions and agreed to promote bilateral cooperation in energy, defense and cyber security, it said.

"Lithuania enjoys a special relationship with Israel," Linkevičius said.

"This year marks the 25th anniversary of diplomatic relations between Lithuania and Israel. On this occasion, there are many events, initiatives and visits related to Israel in Lithuania. We appreciate the friendship of our countries and seek to bring them even closer together," he said.

The Lithuanian minister is visiting Israel at Netanyahu's invitation. The Israeli prime minister's family has Litvak roots. His great-grandmother came from Šeduva, a small town in northern Lithuania.
