Refugees were the focus of Monday's meeting between Lithuania's President Dalia Grybauskaitė and Vatican's Secretary of State Cardinal Pietro Parolin.

After the meeting, Parolin said it was important not to fear people of other religions and cultures.

"I think that fear is the worst counsellor for everything. (…) Of course, there are problems, it is not easy, we know that the problem is integration, it is a real problem, because we are from different cultures, different religions, different backgrounds, but we have a common ground, which is humanity," the cardinal told Vilnius journalists.

The president reiterated an invitation for Pope Francis to visit Lithuania. Grybauskaitė also conferred a state award upon Parolin – the Great Cross of the Order of Vytautas the Great.
