The newly appointed minister of energy Rokas Masiulis says he has no personal objections to developing nuclear energy.

However, Masiulis, former head of state-owned oil company Klaipėdos Nafta, did not comment on the prospects or the necessity of the Lithuanian nuclear power plant project.

"I do not wish to comment, I have not been sworn in as the minister yet. I would like to study the issue in-depth, to familiarise myself with the situation, see what has been done at the ministry.

"Personally I am not against such technology, I have no prejudice, this should be assessed in the context of the state, what is best for the energy security taking into account the cost," Masiulis told the national television LRT.

Talking about the unexpected nomination as the energy minister, Masiulis guessed that leader of the Labour Party Loreta Graužinienė might have chosen him because of professional acquaintance. According to the minister, the two had worked at the Lithuanian Chamber of Auditors. During the last parliamentary term, Graužinienė chaired the Audit Committee and audited Masiulis' company.
