Maintenance of state roads in Lithuania will be handed over to a single state-run company, Kelių Priežiūra (Road Maintenance), by the end of this year. Lithuania's Transport and Communications Minister Rokas Masiulis says that restructuring of the sector had been in the plans for a long time.

"The reform was brewing throughout the years of independence, however, used to lack political will. We have information about hiring of close family members in the companies, we have information from the Public Procurement Service about lack of transparency in public procurement, we see inefficient management of state property, with roads cleared to the end of the district and then left uncleaned. Every region lives like a separate duchy or a separate kingdom. These things must change, it is not a modern Lithuania, we should move forward and build our country on different principles," Masiulis told a news conference on Tuesday.

Companies in charge of road maintenance received about 90 million euros per year, which they used to spend in an inefficient manner, said the minister.
