“From our main cargo groups, growth was achieved in three of them: the amount of oil products grew by 30%, bulk fertilizers by 10%, and grain by 5.7%.,” said Artūras Drungilas, the head of the marketing and the corporate affairs at the Klaipėda seaport directorate.
“Turnover in the port is a record one – we are excited, we have not expected such results but we, the port, the port company has achieved that," he said
However, Klaipėda State Seaport Authority Director General Arvydas Vaitkus expects 2016 to be a difficult year. He explained that there is high tension between competing ports, especially because of Russia's strategy to transfer its cargo to its own ports.
“We do not have data from Russia‘s ports, but we can see what is happening with a decline in freight traffic. We feel it through the container traffic, ruble devaluation - industrial decline will affect the operation of all Eastern coast ports,” Vaitkus said.
The port posted record revenues of €46.9 million in 2015, according to economy and finance manager Martynas Armonaitis. “The growth is three times higher than that of the Lithuanian economy,” he said.
The port paid €684 million in taxes this year, according to Vaitkus. He said the government‘s decision in 2013 not to deduct profits from the port authorities had brought €102 million in profits to the state over three years.
