Lithuanian Transport Minister Rokas Masiulis is meeting with members of the European Parliament's Transport and Tourism Committee (TRAN) in Vilnius on Wednesday to discuss the course of the European standard gauge railway project Rail Baltica.

Members of the Seimas and Mantas Bartuška, CEO of the state railway company Lietuvos Geležinkeliai (Lithuanian Railways), will also take part in the meeting.

The minister will accompany the TRAN members on their trip to the Kaunas intermodal terminal.

The three Baltic prime ministers signed an agreement on the development of Rail Baltica in Tallinn in late January, stating their commitment to complete the project by 2025 and have the new railway operational in 2026.

One of the biggest problems that Rail Baltica currently faces is a negative attitude toward the project in Estonia. Some Estonian activists protest against the Rail Baltica, saying that not all information about the project is being disclosed. The project has also faced opposition over concerns that the railway may affect animal migration.

The Rail Baltica project calls for building a high-speed railway line from Tallinn to Lithuania's border to Poland, with passenger trains running at speeds of up to 240 kilometers per hour and freight trains at up to 120 km/h.
