As of Saturday, residents of Lithuania have exchanged about 40 million litas (EUR 11.6m) in post offices of Lithuania, said Inga Dundulienė, the head of the Network Service of Lietuvos Paštas (Lithuanian Post).

She said a total of 30 million litas were collected on Friday and about 10 million litas over three hours of Saturday.

"Client flows are bigger in regional cities, while the flow in bigger cities is smaller," Dundulienė told the national radio LRT on Saturday.

In her words, currency exchange in some post offices is stalling due to delays of collectors.

"Of course, collectors failed to deliver the money in some areas even today. It is not that we are unable to perform the operation but we have to wait when we do not have enough cash," said the representative of Lithuanian Post.

Some 330 post offices across Lithuania will exchange the litas to the euros free of charge until the end of February. Currency exchange services will also be provided by the country's banks and credit unions.

Lithuania swapped its national currency, the litas, for the euro on 1 January 2015.
