After closing the route to Moscow, Lietuvos Geležinkeliai (Lithuanian Railways, LG), the state-run railway company, plans on launching a passenger train to the Latvian city of Daugavpils. The company's spokesman said LG was ready but had to wait for the final approval from Latvian railways.

"On our part, we are ready, we need to finish the coordination with the Latvian side," LG spokesman Mantas Dubauskas told BNS, adding that the route should be available in the coming months.

Lietuvos Geležinkeliai currently carries passengers to the border city of Turmantas, however, seeks to extend the route by approximately 15 km to Daugavpils.

New routes were on the agenda of the Monday's meeting between LG executives and Latvijas Dzelzsels.
