As yet another tourism company unexpectedly terminated its activities on Friday, Lithuanian President Dalia Grybauskaitė says that the State Tourism Department (VTD) has not learned from its mistakes of the past, while the competence of the institution's heads is very questionable.

According to the president, no country in the world is safe from bankruptcies in the extremely competitive tourism sector, but supervising instructions - namely, the Ministry of Economy and the VTD - must do everything to prevent such cases of bankruptcies. Grybauskaitė says that both institutions failed to learn from Go Planet Travel bankruptcy which took place in July. The then VTD director Raimonda Balnienė lost her job following the high-profile bust.

"Now we have other cases and can see that the Tourism Department has not changed its attitude and work style whatsoever," the president said.

Grybauskaitė says that such recurring situations make her seriously doubt the competence of the VTD officials.
