The launch of the new salary scheme should reportedly be started in September of 2018, with 20 million euros envisaged for the purpose in the next year's budget draft.

The ministry announced the proposed sum for two years on Thursday, saying that an agreement has been reached with trade unions on the content of collective work contracts.

Top officials of education trade unions and the Education and Science Ministry on Wednesday achieved compromise on collective contracts, which, among other things, stipulate introduction of staff salaries within two years.

Audrius Jurgelevičius, the leader of the Lithuanian Education Trade Union, told BNS that other points had also been finalized. Jurgelevičius says he was assured by the minister that there would be no obstacles for signing the contract, as the government's remarks were taken into consideration during the preparation process.

The ministry said the draft collective contract would be proposed for the government's nearest meeting and be signed without delay.

"By 2020, teacher salaries will be 1,000 euros," said the Education and Science Ministry.

According to the communique, an agreement has also been reached to create conditions for increase of salaries for lecturers and scientists in 2018-2022 and improve their working conditions.
