In an interview with the Žinių Radijas news radio on Wednesday, the minister expressed his regret that Vilnius District Municipality, which had the chance to take over this area, make it more attractive and promote tourism in this area, failed to do so.
"I welcome that idea as private capital will be invested and business will try to have maximum use of this area and make it into an attraction spot. It's sad that the local municipality failed to use the opportunity. I think business will do that," Sinkevičius said.
The Geographical Centre of Europe will be auctioned in the fall. BNS Lithuania reminds that the Ministry of Economy tried to lease the premises for ten years in late 2012 but failed to attract any interest.
The Geographical Centre of Europe's complex is situated in the village of Girija, 26 km from Vilnius.
In 1989, scientists from the French National Institute of Geography declared the geographical centre of Europe to be in Lithuania, 26 kilometers north of Vilnius.
