Up to 100 Lithuanian troops will continue their service in Afghanistan next year, Chief of Defence Major General Jonas Vytautas Žukas said during a meeting with Lithuanian soldiers serving in the NATO peace support operation in Afghanistan.

In his words, NATO forces are now being actively withdrawn from Afghanistan and the military infrastructure is being dismantled, with active preparations underway for the Resolute Support operation due to start in early 2015.

"I would like to note that the reduction of NATO forces made the security situation in Afghanistan increasingly tense. Afghanistan's national army and security forces often fail to deter Taliban pressure by themselves, therefore, the number of attacks on NATO forces and non-governmental organizations operating in the country has increased. The situation will demand that our troops do not only perform their assigned functions well but are also alert and professional when moving outside the bases," Žukas said in a press release circulated by the Ministry of National Defence.

There are roughly 70 Lithuanians deployed in Afghanistan with the multinational allied forces.

Starting next March, Lithuania intends to recall the mission performing development cooperation tasks in Afghanistan.
