Lithuania's State Defence Council intends to hold a meeting later this week to present the updated concept of armed defence, says Valdemaras Sarapinas, the president's adviser for national security.

"The chief of defence will present how Lithuania will execute the defence and what army we need," Sarapinas told the Žinių Radijas news radio on Tuesday morning.

In his words, the meeting will also address further steps in enhancing and enlarging the Armed Forces, as well as increase of the defence budget.

"Our state leaders will decide on army development priorities, directions of modernization, allocations and main acquisitions for 2016," he said.

Furthermore, the council's members should see the projected army structure and marginal numbers for the next five years.

"The proposal to members of the State Defence Council will be to expand the army's structure and increase the number of troops," said the presidential adviser.

In response to the geopolitical situation, the State Defence Council last November called for an updated concept of armed defence. The earlier document dates back to 2011.

According to the Constitution, the State Defence Council discusses and coordinates key issues of state defence. The council includes the president, the prime minister, the parliamentary speaker, the defence minister and the chief of defence.
