The situation at Lithuania's borders, where controls have been stepped after the abduction of an Estonian security service officer into Russia, is calm, Interior Minister Dailis Alfonsas Barakauskas said on Sunday.

"As information about the reinforcement of the border was made public, there have even been no attempts to smuggle contraband. There have been no violations. It seems that this information has worked," he told BNS.
Controls have been tightened at Lithuania's borders with the Russian exclave of Kaliningrad and Belarus, the minister said.

"The tightened measures will be in place until Monday. Further decisions will depend on the situation. Indeed, everything is very calm and safe," he said.

Prime Minister Algirdas Butkevičius said on Saturday that Lithuania had stepped up its border controls on Friday following the abduction incident in Estonia. He also said that he had not received any information that similar acts of provocation might take place in Lithuania.

The Estonian Internal Security Service said that unidentified persons from Russia abducted its officer on Estonian territory near the Luhamaa border checkpoint 9 a.m. on Friday. The officer was performing his official duties related to cross-border crime prevention when he was abducted at gunpoint and taken across the border to Russia.

Estonian Foreign Minister Urmas Paet said on Saturday that the abducted officer had been taken to Moscow and that Estonia was trying to get in contact with him.
