Under a decree signed on Wednesday, Sarapinas will replace another presidential aide, Kęstutis Budrys, in the post.
According to the Lithuanian Constitution, the State Defenęe Council discusses and coordinates key issues in connection to defence of the state. Sitting on the council are the president, the prime minister, the parliamentary speaker, the defence minister and the chief of defence.
