The two An-22 were flying from the Russian Kaliningrad region to mainland Russia, one of them had its transponder switched off, Captain Donatas Suchockis, public relations officer at the Lithuanian army's Joint Staff, told BNS.

"The two An-22 were flying according to a plan, one of them had the transponder on, while the other had it switched off. They were both in contact," said Suchockis.

Last week, NATO fighter-jets jets did not perform any scrambles last week.

The NATO air-policing mission in Lithuania is carried out by Norway and Italy.
