On 17-23 August NATO fighter jets conducting air policing tasks in the Baltic skies were scrambled twice to intercept aircraft in the international airspace above the Baltic states, the Ministry of National Defence of Lithuania reports.

On 17 August NATO fighters scrambled to intercept an IL-20 reconnaissance aircraft of the Russian Federation which had a flight plan pre-filed, was not using its on-board transponder but maintained communication with air traffic control centres. The other intercepted aircraft was an IL-18 transport jetliner of the Russian Federation that also had a pre-filed flight plan, had its on-board transponder switched on and maintained radio communication with air traffic control centres.
