On 16 January, NATO fighter jets conducting the Baltic Air Policing Mission were scrambled to identify and intercept an aircraft which was flying over neutral waters of the Baltic Sea without a pre-filed flight plan.

The aircraft was identified to be a Russian military IL-76 flying from mainland Russian towards Kaliningrad, its onboard transponder was switched on and the aircraft was maintaining radio communication, Lithuania's Ministry of National Defence said.
