This year's largest national Lithuanian military exercise, Lightning Strike 2016, has begun. The Lithuanian military, together with police, firefighters, ambulances, border guards, municipal personnel and riflemen, will practice responding to the first stages of hybrid and other types of military actions.

According to Arnas Mikaila, a major at the Lithuanian military's joint staff exercise planning division, the exercises' primary actions will be held in Klaipėda, so residents should not be surprised to see military equipment or hear gunshots.

According to Mikaila, almost 4,000 soldiers, officials and civilians will participate in the exercise. 3,000 reserve troops will also be called in from Vilnius, Kaunas, Alytus and Utena.
