Among conscripts in the conscription lists published on Wednesday are Lithuania's best tennis player Ričardas Berankis, 24, 20-year-old football player Lukas Spalvis and 23-year-old basketball forward Tautvydas Sabonis.

Under the decree, military service can be postponed if the conscript possesses outstanding talent or achievements in science, art, sports and other areas.

Major Žygimantas Adamonis, the chief of the Conscription Unit, told BNS that there were no specific criteria for postponing the service, with final decisions to be made by local panels.

On Wednesday, Lithuania's Ministry of National Defence published lists of conscription for mandatory initial military service. The lists include 36,825 young men.

Young men between 19 and 26 are to be drafted for mandatory nine-month training, with plans to select 3,000 conscripts this year.
