The United States (US) will double the number of air-policing fighter-jets in Lithuania during the large-scale Russian-Belarusian military exercises Zapad 2017 this fall, President Dalia Grybauskaitė said.

In her words, more US troops and equipment will be stationed in Lithuania during the training.

"The increased presence of the military, doubling of the air-policing and more US troops, equipment and vessels here during the Zapad training indicates special attention to our region," Grybauskaitė said in an interview broadcast on Monday.

The NATO air-policing mission is currently conducted from Lithuania and Estonia by four fighter-jets in each country. The United States, which is due to take over the mission in Šiauliai, northern Lithuania, at the beginning of September, will bring eight jets.
