International exercise dedicated for artillery and mortar units Flaming Thunder 2014, organised by the Land Force, is commencing on Monday at the General Silvestras Žukauskas Training Range. Over the course of two weeks, more than three hundred Lithuanian and US soldiers will be improving their skills, training to conduct defensive operations using artillery and mortars.

120mm and 60mm mortar fire teams and 105mm howitzer batteries of the Lithuanian Land Force will operate together with 120mm, 81mm and 60mm mortar fire teams of the US 173rd Airborne Brigade and 105mm howitzer batteries of the 4th Battalion 319th Airborne Field Artillery Regiment.

The goal of the Flaming Thunder exercise, which is held for the second time, is to develop combat readiness of the Land Force artillery and mortar teams to provide indirect fire support to infantry units.
