The four jets made a successful landing before 6PM (local time) on Sunday, Ieva Gulbinienė, public relations officer at the Air Base, confirmed to BNS.

The French airmen will replace the Portuguese troops currently conducting the mission with four F-16 Fighting Falcon fighters.

The official exchange ceremony of the contingents conducting the NATO air policing mission in the Baltic states will be held at the air base on Wednesday.

This will be the fifth time when the French troops will patrol the Baltic skies. This time, France assigned about 100 Air Force soldiers from Luxeuil Air Base stationed in eastern France.

French airmen last served in the air-policing mission in 2007, followed by shifts in 2010, 2011 and 2013.

In September, Germany with Eurofighter Typhoons will take over the air-policing mission from the United Kingdom at the Amari base in Estonia.
