Rupšys is replacing Major General Almantas Leika who has served as commander of Lithuania's Land Force for the past four years.

During the ceremony at the President's Office, Grybauskaitė emphasized that the general rank was a symbol of huge responsibility, appreciation and trust, which carries the obligation of being an example to thousands of soldiers and officers. The president wished the general to always remain demanding and dedicated to his homeland and its people, the President's Office said in a press release.

Land Force is the basis of Lithuania's defence capacities, according to President Grybauskaitė, therefore one of the main tasks for the general will be to ensure continuance of the work by consolidating them.

According to the press release, development of the Armed Forces, improvement of the level of readiness, modernization, intensive military exercises with allies and introduction of new defence systems are the main tasks to be continued in a consistent manner.
