"Europe faces a new and different and more challenging security environment, one that has some significant and lasting implications," Breedlove told journalists at the Lithuanian Aviation Base in Šiauliai.

In his words, Russia is attempting to change the rules and principles of international politics that have been the foundation of European security for decades.

"(The Russian challenge) is global, not regional and its enduring, not temporary," said the general

In Breedlove's words, NATO does not know what steps Russia will take next, but the Alliance is learning from its current actions.

The NATO supreme Allied commander in Europe noted that the Russian army was becoming stronger and more modern. In his words, NATO must demonstrate its ability to deter this.
