Prime Minister Algirdas Butkevičius says that a decision to lift legal protection of the Soviet statues on the Green Bridge should be made only by specialists. He added, however, that a discussion on the issue is needed.

"I believe the issue should be decided by people who have been assigned this function - historians, art people. The decision should be made after their proposals are discussed and they are the ones who should make that decision," Butkevičius told the radio Žinių Radijas on Thursday.

As reported, the Immovable Cultural Heritage Assessment Council (NTPVT) decided on 10 February not to revoke legal protection of the Green Bridge and its Soviet statues erected in 1952. The following day Chairman of the NTPVT Romas Pakalnis stepped down in protest of the decision.

Minister of Culture Šarūnas Birutis signed a decree last year obligating to remove all objects with Soviet or Nazi symbols from the list of cultural heritage objects protected by the state.
