Interest in books is on the rise, according to sales figures from Lithuanian retail chain “Maxima”. Customers purchased more than 1.2 million books in 2017, and the most intense demand for books in recent years was recorded in the first half of this year. The main reason for this trend is that books written or translated into English are immediately selling out, a press release from the retail chain states.

"Usually, demand for books increases as the weather cools in autumn and winter, when there is more time to spend an evening with a book or buy them as Christmas presents. Although demand for books does not change year-round, customers are constantly looking for inspiring books that are particularly popular at the time – and this season's hit is world-class books in English. Last month, buyers purchased books in English several times more often than during past months before. Right now we are negotiating with suppliers to expand the assortment of such books as soon as possible," says Vilma Drulienė, Maxima's Chief Commercial Officer.

Currently customers can choose from more than 100 different titles in English at the largest stores of "Maxima". Among these books one can find Harry Potter stories, the highly popular crime novels of J. Nesbo, the classics of E. Hemingway, G. Orwell, S. King, A. Christie and other well-known authors.

Until now, "Maxima" has been focusing on enlarging the assortment of books in Lithuanian with the current range consisting of more than 2000 titles.

The most popular books in Lithuanian in "Maxima" stores during past six months are A. Šapoka's "Lithuanian History", "Between Shades of Gray" by R. Šepetys, "The Quag of Mercy" by A. Toliatas, "The Day I Learned to Live" by L. Gounelle, and the "Kakė Makė" series of books. Works by Lithuanian authors that currently attract a lot of interest of customers include "Life" by B. Tiškevič, "Notes of an Imperfect Mother" by R. Murauskienė, "Salt to the Sea" by R. Šepetys, and "How to Raise a Person" by A. Kūrienė.

Books in English can be found at "Maxima" stores located at shopping centres "Akropolis" in Vilnius, Kaunas, Klaipėda and Šiauliai. Also at "Maxima" at the shopping centre "Ozas" and at one of the largest "Maxima" store in Vilnius situated at Mindaugo st. as well as at "Hyper Maxima" in Kaunas.

"Books in the English language are an excellent choice for those wishing to improve their foreign language skills, or for foreigners, holidaymakers or permanent residents in Lithuania. Such an interest encourages us to source an even wider range of English books so that more of our customers can enjoy quality time with a book," says V. Drulienė.
