The City Council of Kaunas on Tuesday named BC Žalgiris Kaunas head coach Šarūnas Jasikevičius an honorary citizen of Lithuania's second-biggest city.

"The coach of the Žalgiris basketball club is one of the most prominent Lithuanian players in Europe. Therefore, a unanimous decision was made to propose awarding Jasikevicius the title of an honorary citizen," Benjaminas Želvys, chairman of the city's Awards Commission, said.

The council voted in favor unanimously.

Jasikevičius led his team to a third-place finish in this year's Euroleague.

Arvydas Sabonis, another internationally famous Lithuanian basketball player, was named an honorary citizen of Kaunas back in 1997.
