She called on members of a joint commission of the parliament and the Lithuanian World Community to start discussions on the matter.

"The central and fundamental issue of the present day is Lithuania's worsening demographic situation and the growing number of people leaving their homeland," Graužinienė said in her welcome speech.

"So I think it is time for your commission to start talking about a programme for Lithuanians returning home," she said.

According to Statistics Lithuania, 439,500 people emigrated from Lithuania between 2004 and 2013.

The Commission of the Seimas and the Lithuanian World Community on Tuesday launched its last session of the current legislative tenure.

The commission normally meets biannually to discuss cooperation between Lithuania and Lithuanian expatriates.
