Lithuanian President Dalia Grybauskaitė plans to attend a memorial ceremony for former German Chancellor Helmut Kohl in the eastern French city of Strasbourg on Saturday, her press office has told BNS.

European leaders and former US President Bill Clinton are expected to attend the memorial event in the European Parliament.

Such an official European memorial event will be held for the first time to pay tribute to Kohl, one of just three people granted the title of Honorary Citizen of Europe.

Kohl died at the age of 87 on June 16.

He served as German chancellor from 1982 to 1998 and is often called the architect of Germany's reunification and European integration.
