If Vytenis Andriukaitis of Lithuania is entrusted with the health and food safety portfolio in the new European Commission, his office, starting from 1 November, would be led by Arūnas Vinčiūnas, Lithuania's deputy permanent representative to the EU.

“He [Vytenis Andriukaitis] proposed to me to join the preparations [for hearings at the European Parliament (EP)]. He offered me those duties when he was nominated in Lithuania,” Vinčiūnas told BNS after Andriukaitis’ introduction at the EP.

The diplomat added that officials from the EP and other institutions he had talked to were positive about Andriukaitis’ answers to MEPs’ questions.

Lithuania's former health minister on Tuesday was interviewed by the Committee on the Environment, Public Health and Food Safety and the Committee on Agriculture and Rural Development.

The hearings of candidate commissioners, presented by incoming Commission President Jean-Claude Juncker, a former prime minister of Luxembourg, started on Monday and will come to an end on 7 October. The European Parliament will then vote on whether or not to approve the full Commission.

The new Commission will take office in November.
