The forthcoming EU Eastern Partnership summit in Riga should not leave an impression that the EU is stepping back from its commitments to partners under Russia's pressure, says Jovita Neliupšienė, chief adviser to Lithuanian President Dalia Grybauskaitė on foreign policy issues.

It’s also important to make visa decisions for people as it will facilitate travelling for them, she added.

"When the summit took place in Vilnius, a decision was made to introduce a visa-free regime for Moldova. We really hope we'll be able to do that for Georgia now, and for other countries, travelling will be facilitated considerably or made cheaper, if a visa-free agreement is not possible," she told the Žinių Radijas news radio on Tuesday morning.

According to Neliupšienė, the EU needs to finalize the ratification of the association agreements with Ukraine, Moldova and Georgia before the summit, and also try to send a message of support for those countries by defining their further and more ambitious ties with the EU.

"I believe that the key challenge during the Riga summit is to avoid the impression that the EU is stepping back from its commitments to neighbouring countries under Russia's pressure," Neliupšienė said.

The EU Eastern Partnership summit will take place in Riga on 21-22 May.
