The Lithuanian foreign minister said that the United Kingdom was an important and strong member of the European Union, and hoped that the country would stay in the EU, the ministry said in a press release.

British Prime Minister David Cameron has pledged to hold a referendum by the end of 2017 on the country's EU membership.

Linkevičius and Lawrence also discussed joint action of the European Union to combat disinformation, incitement to war and hostile propaganda. Lithuania's foreign minister thanked the newly-appointed ambassador for experts' bilateral cooperation in the field of strategic communications.

Europe's security situation was also high on the agenda of the meeting in Vilnius.

According to the press release, Linkevičius welcomed the United Kingdom's strong and consistent position on Russia.

In the ambassadorial position, Lawrence replaced David Hunt whose term in office expired in June.
