Lithuania is ready to step up its involvement in migrant rescue missions and provide humanitarian aid as the European Unions mulls ways to deal with the migrant crisis in the Mediterranean Sea, Lithuanian President Dalia Grybauskaitė says.

"We, Lithuania, can increase our participation in rescue missions. This is what we are currently discussing," she told journalists during her visit to the town of Dotnuva, central Lithuania. "If there's a need for humanitarian assistance, we will also be ready to get involved based on our capabilities. Not a single EU member state can stay aside."

According to Grybauskaitė, the crisis surrounding the inflow of immigrants has both social and financial aspects, and it's also "a problem of relations with North African countries."

800 migrants from Libya died when their boat capsized in the Mediterranean Sea on Sunday. In response to Italy's request, the EU is holding an emergency summit on Thursday to discuss the issue. The EU is also mulling stepping up its border control operation in the Mediterranean Sea region.
